Who are the Taino?
(Photo: Reconstruction of a Taino village in Maita, Cuba)

The Taino were the indigenous people of the Caribbean, particularly in the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico), who were encountred by Christopher Columbus in 1492. They lived in agricultural societies in well-established villages and with a matrilineal system of kinship and inheritance.
Taino words that have been adopted into English include "barbecue," "canoe," "cassava," "guava," "hammock," "hurricane," and "tobacco."
