Discover Puerto Rico!
Each day a different picture pertaining to the youth's tour of Puerto Rico is featured, along with a brief
explanation and a few links for further investigation.
The world's largest telescope
(from 1963 till 2016)!
It was a spherical reflector radio telescope built into a natural sinkhole. It had a diameter of 1,000 feet!
It was primarily used for research in radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar astronomy, as well as for programs that search for extraterrestrial intelligence (
SETI).
The telescope's unique and futuristic design led to several appearances in film, gaming and television productions, such as for the climactic fight scene in the James Bond film
GoldenEye
(1995).
The telescope collapsed
on December 1, 2020 when one of the support cables broke letting the 900-ton receiver platform crash into the main dish!
